The Crisis in Haiti Continues

Haiti in CrisisWe were all saddened to hear of the tragedy in Haiti. On January 12, 2010, a 7.3- magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, with its epicenter near Port-Au-Prince. The quake caused severe damage in Port-Au-Prince, Leogane, Jacmel and surrounding communities. By January 24, 2010, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater have been recorded.

An estimated 3 million people were affected by the quake; the Haitian Government reported that an estimated 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. They also estimated that 250,00 residences and 300,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged. U.N. reports state the earthquake destroyed 60 percent of government infrastructure.

As of June 12, 2010, six months later, more than 1,500,000 people remain in overcrowded displacement camps. Donors from around the world promised $5.3 billion at an aid conference in March, but still months later, less than 2% of that money has been handed over to the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission.

The already fierce, daily struggle to survive has taken a disastrous turn for many Haitians. If you'd like to help Haiti's Hope in the relief efforts please make a donation below.
